Hakea is a genus comprising 159 species and endemic to Australia and surrounding islands. The south-west of Western Australia has the majority of these, along with the east coast and the genus has a wide variety of leaf and flower types.
Hakea salicifolia or Willow-leafed Hakea is a large shrub or small tree 5-9m that is fast growing and makes an ideal specimen tree. It's mentioned as a potential drain clogger (here's a link to to the good, bad and ugly when it comes to pipe busters) Last but not least is Hakea orthorrhyncha - bird beak hakea. The stem on this shrub is a rich brown and the red flowers appear in clusters from winter through to spring. These become nobbly fruits with a 'beak', which give the plant its common name.
