Lovely mackerel sky yesterday ahead of the heat wave that started today. It's currently 34 and the coolest top temp forecast for next five days. I spent a couple of hours last night watering the plants that are still rather small to withstand the onslaught. I just hope that the many hundreds of Pink Gum trees in the area can survive the summer following near defoliation by the second lerp infestation for the year. I would guess that most trees have less than 5% leaves with some amount of green left. Another strange thing this year is the failure of the Grass Trees to produce flower spikes. This is the only one from the hundred or so that are in, or visible from, the house yard. No idea why that is. Many birds and insects enjoy their appearance. I've had a few attempts to grow a Grass Tree from seed but all have failed. Summer flowers bring back the butterflies - above a Painted Lady - -while the Common Brown illustrates the Orange Ball Buddleja's common name - the Butterfly Bush. The bees also live up their busy reputation in summer - they need to transport about a litre of water per day to the hive to help keep it cool, as well as dilute the honey. A final note The Weebly site records the number of visitors and how many pages are viewed (it doesn't display personal details, I hasten to add.) Last week there was one view of the 20 Acre Bush Block Site. Next year, barring a sudden explosion of interest in the blog, I will cease the diary element and concentrate on finding, identifying and recording the fauna and flora here. Heartfelt thanks to you for visiting.
