I was pleased to see (and later identify) a female Golden Whistler - another first for me. As is often the case, the female's plumage is quite a contrast to the smartly-feathered male. Hopefully this means a breeding pair. LW was straight on to the first callistemon of the year - last year the babies were born when it was in full bloom and had a very handy supply of nectar in their nursery. The blackbirds are still around - well, this female anyway - I hear her and LW quarreling quite a lot. Also around - lone cuckoo - or a lone cuckoo calling day and night without any reply that I can hear. There's been no rain for a few weeks and already the green ground cover of various grasses and weeds is beginning to fade. This kangaroo is easily big enough to jump the rabbit fence but he probably won't bother until the wild spring growth is all browned off by summer. There's plenty of spring left to enjoy though -

Well the female Golden Whistler paints herself smartly with shadowed twigs and cannily picks a golden bough to complement her subtle tones.
